Just interested in what the procedure might be for allowing multiple versions of returned query results, that is for the “station” service it might be different versions of StationXML returned, or QuakeML for the event service, or maybe future MiniSeed versions.

At the moment for the station service we have “format=xml” as the requested format option, I’d be interested in hearing how other groups have handled similar updates, or what should be a standard way of doing it.

Thanks

    Hi

I think this needs to be addressed by a revision of the web service
specification. There is an issue to track this for the fdsn station web
    service here:
    https://github.com/FDSN/fdsnws-station/issues/6
although it would be best if this was handled in the same way across all of
    the web services.

      Hi WG3-

An issue to consider in adding this flexibility is the increasing difficulty in supporting the generation of multiple versions of output. Not that it can't be done, but at IRIS we punted on the idea for the switch to 1.1 due to the difficulties in reliability that it was going to introduce.

Should there be a preponderance of minor versions of StationXML going forward (so far, there hasn't), then we'll need for FDSN members to think about this some more. In general, minor version releases are supposed to be back-compatible, if not mostly cross-compatible.

In the case of a major change in StationXML, it will be a new major version, and likely have us consider a new major version number for the FDSNWS station service.

Would a downloadable back-conversion tool suffice for the needs of a user that needs to continue to use an older version?

      -Rob
