Hello WG II,

This email is to gather parties interested in a JSON representation of important (core) FDSN station metadata. The intention is a develop a schema with all interested parties and jointly propose it to WG II as an FDSN format and to WG III for support in fdsnws-station as an output format.

If you would like to be included in pre-proposal discussions please let me know by 24 July. Alternatively, you can contribute to the discussion through Github project issues.

IRIS has developed such a schema with the following priorities:

1. To provide core seismic station metadata from multiple "levels" in a single, small container. Content similar to the text data. Unlike text output, the JSON will always include higher level information, e.g. station level includes network level details.

2. To provide a flavor of seismic station metadata for applications that would prefer JSON.

The prototype schema is available here:

Ideally, most discussion will take place in Github project issues.

regards,
Chad
