FDSN Network Information

FDSN code ZU (2025-2027) Network name Passive Array for Critical Minerals across the Island of Newfoundland (PACMIN)
Start year 2025 Operated by
  • Memorial University of Newfoundland
End year 2027 Deployment region -
Description

The objective of this project is to install a network of 20 broadband seismograph stations across the island of Newfoundland to record local, regional and global earthquakes as well as ambient ground vibrations for a period of 2 years. All of the resulting seismic records will be analyzed using multiple methods, to probe the structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the region. Information on lithospheric structure is key to understanding how the region was shaped by Appalachian mountain-building processes, and how this complex tectonic history controls the distribution of key mineral deposits such as gold and critical minerals.
