FDSN Network Information

FDSN code XV (2024-2024) Network name Semipalatinsk Seismo-Acoustic Monitoring (Semipalatinsk Seismo-Acoustic Monitoring)
Start year 2024 Operated by
  • Michigan State University (MSU), United States of America
End year 2024 Deployment region -
Description

The Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) in eastern Kazakhstan is one of the former nuclear test sites utilized by the Soviet Union. Since the closure of the STS, it's infrastructure has been progressively destroyed according to international agreements. As a former test site, a detailed understanding of the wave propagation characteristics of the region is important. Broadband sensors will be placed along profiles extending to several hundred kilometers to record regional signals to provide information on velocity, attenuation, and phase propagation. We will utilize signal sources from local tectonic earthquakes and explosions from mines both on and around the STS.
