Description

EGS Collab is an experiment aimed at better modeling enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) by heavily monitoring a decameter-scale testbed in a mine in South Dakota. The second phase of the experiment at 4100 ft depth in the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) attempted to induce shear on preexisting fractures to create permeability between an injection borehole and a number of nearby production boreholes. The experiment was monitored by a number of systems including electrical resistivity, active-source time-lapse seismic, a full suite of distributed fiber optic interrogators, and a network of high-frequency piezoelectric accelerometers. Two 3C broadband instruments were also installed in the mine tunnel next to the testbed to record the slow "tilt" signals associated with the injection operations (this network).
