Description

The South Armorican Shear Zone concentrates most of the instrumental seismicity in north-west France. The region between Lorient and Vannes is the area in which the largest instrumental and historical earthquakes have occurred in Brittany. We have also observed swarms of low magnitude earthquakes in 2021 and 2024. Notably, the 2024 swarm was characterized by several M3 events that were felt by the population.
Despite the comprehensive permanent seismic network in Morbihan, comprising five stations of the RLBP and one station of RAP, there remains a deficiency in the detection and characterization of the smallest events during these episodes. In the FaSiRe project we propose to operate, for 36 months, an array of 10 temporary medium-band stations (20 s cutoff frequency) that will allow us to i) improve the detection and localization of low magnitude (M<2) events and possibility illuminate unknown seismogenic structures in southern Morbihan; ii) monitor the spatio-temporal evolution of the swarms to highlight possible links with fluid circulations. As a good estimation of the focal depth is crucial, we propose to install a station just above the location of the swarms.
