Description

WAVEGUARD Mediterranean Sea-State Seismic Network is a permanent seismic network operating in Sicily, the Sicily Channel and the Maltese Islands. The network integrates seismic stations originally deployed within the INTERREG Italy–Malta i-waveNET project with new stations installed and operated within the INTERREG Italy–Malta WAVEGUARD project. Its main objective is the continuous monitoring and characterization of microseism generated by sea-wave activity and the development of seismic-based tools for monitoring sea state and extreme meteo-marine phenomena.
The network mainly includes three-component broadband seismic stations deployed mainly along coastal areas of Sicily and Malta. Continuous seismic data are used for spectral analysis, seismic array processing, source localization and the characterization of ocean-wave-generated seismic noise. The observations are integrated with other marine and meteorological monitoring systems, including HF radars, wave and sea-state information, to investigate and monitor the coupling between the atmosphere, ocean and solid Earth.
The network is operated within a collaboration involving the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), University of Catania and University of Malta.
