| Description | The Fiji Seismic Network is a national geophysical monitoring system operated by the Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources Department through the National Tsunami Warning Centre in Suva. The network provides 24/7 monitoring of earthquakes, tsunamis, and related geohazards that may affect Fiji and the wider Southwest Pacific region. It consists of seismic stations installed across key islands, including Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Kadavu, Taveuni, Lakeba, Tailevu, and other strategic locations. These stations help improve earthquake detection, location accuracy, magnitude estimation, and tsunami warning capability. The network is mainly made up of broadband seismic sensors, many of which use VSAT telemetry to transmit real-time data to the National Tsunami Warning Centre. This data is processed and analysed to identify significant seismic events and assess their potential impact. The information collected supports timely public warnings, emergency response coordination, and disaster preparedness, helping to protect lives, infrastructure, and communities across Fiji. |
