Description |
Combined weak and strong motion network to monitor the natural and mining-induced seismicity of the Lower Rhine Embayment. Operation of the observatory started in 1955 after a damaging earthquake of magnitude 5.8 near Euskirchen, with some of the external stations dating back to the 1970s. In 2006, the weak motion network (12 stations with Geotech S-13, Mark L4-3D, Lennartz Le-3D, and two STS-2 sensors; sampling rate 125 Hz) was complemented by a strong motion network (SeFoNiB - Seismologisches Forschungsnetz Niederrheinische Bucht; sampling rate 250 Hz) with 23 Kinemetrics EpiSensor 3-component accelerometers, five of them within the Cologne Cathedral. Until 2019, due to technical limitations, data was only collected on an event base for almost all stations, and this is still the case for most strong-motion sensors. |
