Description

The main purpose is to image the near surface resources, including lava tubes and regolith, at Lava Beds National Monument (LBNM), a lunar analog site, using active source seismology. The field sites include (1) Ship Cave, (2) Skull Cave, and (3) a Pleistocene pumice deposit at Caldwell Butte. The caves are analogous to lunar lava tubes, and the pumice deposit serves as an analog to lunar regolith and surface materials. The project builds upon previous field expertise from the NASA-funded TubeX project, and the active source seismology will also be used to understand how similar investigations can be conducted on the Moon and Mars. We also test the applicability of 3D seismic surveys.
