Description

The project SEA-SEIS (Structure, Evolution And SEISmicity of the Irish offshore) was run by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) and deployed broadband Ocean-Bottom Seismometers (OBS) across a large area of the North Atlantic Ocean. All the OBS were model NAMMU, manufactured by K.U.M. (Germany) and equipped with 120 s Trillium Compact seismometers (Nanometrics, Canada). Three components of the ground motion and the broadband hydrophone signal were recorded at 250 samples per second. The OBS were deployed in September-October, 2018, and retrieved in April-May, 2020. Of the 18 instruments deployed, 14 were retrieved. Of these, one recorded data for 17 months and all the others – for the full 19 months of the deployment. The unique new data will yield new insights into the mantle structure and dynamics beneath the region, the deep structure of the enigmatic Iceland Plume, the origins of the North Atlantic Igneous Province, and the behavior and migration patterns of great baleen whales. The ocean-bottom seismometers were provided by iMARL, the “Insitu Marine Laboratory for Geosystems Research,” hosted by DIAS. The SEA-SEIS project was co-funded by the Science Foundation Ireland, the Geological Survey of Ireland, and the Marine Institute.
