Description

In this study, nodal seismic monitoring will be used to address questions related to mountain-block groundwater flow and metal transport at a legacy mine site in the Colorado Front Range. Continuous monitoring will capture spatiotemporal patterns in shear-wave velocity changes related to recharge and infiltration pathways and water table fluctuations through seismic interferometry approaches. Additionally, horizontal-vertical spectral ratios and ambient noise tomography will augment other surface geophysical surveys by providing maps of depth to bedrock and near-surface shear-wave velocity models. Together these data will characterize hydrogeologic properties across the hillslope and lead to a better understanding of how water moves through the legacy mine site, thereby informing cooperators of the potential for metal transport and risk to downstream water quality.
