Description

During the fall of 2024 and winter of 2025, the "SeismoSands" ocean bottom experiment will be performed in Monterey Canyon, California. The main goal of this experiment is to collect continuous seismic recordings to detect seismic signals related to sediment gravity flows along the canyon floor. This experiment is led by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) with international collaborative work. While the initial plan is to deploy sensors on the seafloor only, this SeismoSands nodal experiment aims to maximize the use of data from the seafloor experiment. Data from SmartSolo Nodes at the land sites will be combined with seafloor data to update a velocity model around the Monterey Bay for an improved earthquake monitoring in this region. Data from this experiment will be used for undergraduate research projects at UC Berkeley.
