FDSN Network Information

FDSN code NC Network name USGS Northern California Seismic Network (NCSN)
Start year 1966 Operated by
  • USGS Menlo Park, United States of America
End year - Deployment region
Description

The NCSN is a regional seismic network for monitoring earthquakes in northern and central California. The NCSN is part of the Northern California Seismic System (in cooperation with the BDSN) and the USGS's Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS). As of 2023, the NCSN is a mix of analog and digital instrumentation. The digital instrumentation consists of both broadband and strong motion sensors. Current efforts are focused to upgrade instrumentation in support of earthquake early warning (ShakeAlert) and to eliminate the remaining old analog instrumentation. The NCSN also operates seismic instrumentation for the California Volcano Observatory (CalVO) at high hazard volcanic regions in northern California.
