Description |
• Iraqi Seismic Observatory (ISO) was established in 2014 by the collaboration of the University of Basra, University of Baghdad, and University of Thi-Qar. ISO was initially supported by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL) and is currently supported by LLNL. In 2014, six broadband seismic stations were installed in Basrah, Amarah, Nasiriya, Karbala, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok cites. These stations were installed and hosted by Iraqi universities and educational research farms. Currently, ISO consists of thirteen broadband seismic stations throughout Iraq, which are continuously upgraded with new monitoring equipment. The aim of having this network is to study the seismicity of Iraq and to fill the gap of broadband seismic stations near the Zagros belt, which is the most seismic area in the region. The network is also used as an educational tool for the scientific community and graduate education. |
